Rooney, Martial shines for Manchester United at old Trafford with win over Stoke
VAn gaal was booed off last time at Old Trafford following a 1-0 defeat to Stoke City but saw his team cheered right through until the end as they put in a performance of old. They stay in fifth place and move onto 40 points - five off the Champions League places. The Potters, on the other hand, could drop down a place to 10th with Watford to play Chelsea tomorrow.
Wayne Rooney edged closer to Sir Bobby Charlton’s goalscoring record last night as Manchester United turned on the style.
Rooney scored his seventh goal in as many games to take his United tally to 244, just five behind Sir Bobby’s long-standing club record.
Louis van Gaal’s side had not scored a first-half goal in 11 games at Old Trafford but plundered two inside 23 minutes through Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial.
Lingard put United ahead in the 14th minute with a stooping header, with Martial adding a second nine minutes later with a majestic, sweeping right-foot finish.
Martial turned provider for Rooney eight minutes after the break, the United and England skipper slotting the ball in to keep on course to break Charlton’s record this season.
